Trip to Liepaja

Latvia is not big, however, it turns out that we know very little about it. Liepaja is the third largest city in Latvia. While being in Riga and talking of Liepaja it appears that the most of the children haven’t been there. In order to change the situation one of the autumn weekend (17th and 18th October) was devoted to Liepaja.

The trip to Liepaja is almost four hours long that’ s why the preparation was just as serious as it would be a flight to some country. In fact, a person can fly faster to many countries than the buss goes to Liepaja. Of course, the long trip can be a great adventure.

In autumn, the whole city becomes grey, but it does not prevent us from seeing the city for its true beauty, the city is beautiful, inspiring, and a little wild. For three hours we walked around the city and searched for the most important places in Liepaja: The ghost tree with the songs of “ Livi”, the alley of famous people’s palm print and the “ Rožu” square.

Thanks to Kristapas Oliņs we spent dinner time  in Joseph's Catholic cathedral’ s cosy cellar, where we ate ,talked and relaxed, before going to the prison in Karaosta. It is true that adventure seekers are attracted to Liepaja because of the Karosta’s prison. It is an opportunity to enjoy the role of an arrested, emotionally and physically feel the voiceless state. After a four-hour torture, a night on the wooden bunk beds no longer seemed terrible. There is some kind of satisfaction that the torment is over. Even bigger relief is in the morning when we go to the gates, to leave the prison territory.

The trip was organized within the project "The familial care-safe basis for the child's development". The project was financially supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (2009- 2014) of the "NGO Fund" program’ s subprogram "NGO project program."
